Schedule for May 25 – 29, 2020
Monday, May 25, 2020 is Memorial Day! As it is a holiday, we will NOT have a Google Meet on that day. The schedule and assignments for the week will be posted on Tuesday morning, instead of as usual on Monday morning.
Instead, we will have a Google Meet on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at the time normally scheduled for Office Hours (1:30 – 2:30pm).
The week of May 26 – 29, 2020 will be the last week of assigned Distance Learning work!
A Message on Grading
All of us at Smiley understand that Distance Learning is challenging and can be stressful for families. I do not want you and your student to worry about their grades for this final trimester – it is far more important that your student focuses on practicing and maintaining the skills needed to be ready for 4th grade. However, I want the grading policy for this final trimester to be clear and easy to understand for all families.
As per district policy, students will not get grades lower than his/her second trimester grade in each subject. We understand that Distance Learning has its own unique challenges, and that those challenges can mean grades earned during this process may not accurately show a student’s abilities. In 3rd grade at Smiley, students will also not be able to earn a grade more than 10% higher than his/her second trimester grade in each subject. For example, a student who had 76% in math in the second trimester can raise that grade up to 86%, changing a C to a B. This is the best way for grades to show the work and effort put into Distance Learning while still considering the restraints of Distance Learning.
In my class, I am grading and updating Aeries based on their Distance Learning assignments at the end of each week. The grades in Aeries may show a lower percentage than the second trimester or may show a percentage higher than 10% above the second trimester, but those will be adjusted when I enter grades into Report Cards. Please know that all work that is not completed during Distance Learning will not affect grades – I understand that it is hard to finish all assignments in some weeks, and that is okay! The only thing that may stop a student from raising his/her grade is if the student turns in low-effort or low-quality work. I would much prefer that your student took the time needed to complete one assignment well than to complete three assignments poorly!
I appreciate all the support and effort you have put into helping your student through these unique and unprecedented times. I am here to support you in any way I can – so please do not hesitate to reach out if there is anything I can do to help or to make Distance Learning more successful for your family!
Yearbooks are still on sale!
