Schedule for May 25 – 29, 2020

Monday, May 25, 2020 is Memorial Day! As it is a holiday, we will NOT have a Google Meet on that day. The schedule and assignments for the week will be posted on Tuesday morning, instead of as usual on Monday morning.

Instead, we will have a Google Meet on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at the time normally scheduled for Office Hours (1:30 – 2:30pm).

The week of May 26 – 29, 2020 will be the last week of assigned Distance Learning work!

A Message on Grading

All of us at Smiley understand that Distance Learning is challenging and can be stressful for families.  I do not want you and your student to worry about their grades for this final trimester – it is far more important that your student focuses on practicing and maintaining the skills needed to be ready for 4th grade.  However, I want the grading policy for this final trimester to be clear and easy to understand for all families.

As per district policy, students will not get grades lower than his/her second trimester grade in each subject.  We understand that Distance Learning has its own unique challenges, and that those challenges can mean grades earned during this process may not accurately show a student’s abilities.  In 3rd grade at Smiley, students will also not be able to earn a grade more than 10% higher than his/her second trimester grade in each subject.  For example, a student who had 76% in math in the second trimester can raise that grade up to 86%, changing a C to a B.  This is the best way for grades to show the work and effort put into Distance Learning while still considering the restraints of Distance Learning.

In my class, I am grading and updating Aeries based on their Distance Learning assignments at the end of each week.  The grades in Aeries may show a lower percentage than the second trimester or may show a percentage higher than 10% above the second trimester, but those will be adjusted when I enter grades into Report Cards.  Please know that all work that is not completed during Distance Learning will not affect grades – I understand that it is hard to finish all assignments in some weeks, and that is okay!  The only thing that may stop a student from raising his/her grade is if the student turns in low-effort or low-quality work.  I would much prefer that your student took the time needed to complete one assignment well than to complete three assignments poorly!

I appreciate all the support and effort you have put into helping your student through these unique and unprecedented times.  I am here to support you in any way I can – so please do not hesitate to reach out if there is anything I can do to help or to make Distance Learning more successful for your family!

Yearbooks are still on sale!

Yearbooks are being sold online for $30 each.  There is a link on the Smiley Website.    They will be first come, first serve!

How to turn your home into a school

Please visit our class Google Classroom on Monday morning to find the assignments for students of room 27.  Read through all the directions and check each assignments.  Make a list of any questions or parts you found confusing to get ready for the afternoon’s Google Meet.  Please help sure all students are ready for the first Google Meet of the week at 1:30pm.  Look for the link in Google Classroom about 10 minutes before!

Please see the Weekly Schedule for times for Google Meets and Teacher Office Houses each week!

  • A note about Office Hours from Mrs. Harmon:  During office hours, I will make myself available to answer questions and offer help within that hour.  If you have questions outside office hours, please don’t hesitate to send me a message! However, I may need up to a day to respond.  As always, I typically don’t respond to message received in the evening until the following school day morning.

Hello families of room 27!

By now, you should have received updates from the district about the timeline of events while schools are closed.  If you have not seen this update yet, please go to https://www.redlandsusd.net/coronavirus and find the latest “District Communication” at the bottom of the page.

I miss all my students and cannot wait to hear from each of you on our new “Staying in Touch” page!  You will also noticed that I’ve added links to resources for ELA, Math, Science & Social Studies, and Other Resources to help your student stay engaged as he/she learns from home.  I am here for help, for support, and for any guidance you may need.

Starting on March 30th, I highly suggest you follow the tips and suggestions given by the district at the bottom of the resource page. Here is a Typical Daily Schedule from our school day.  Please do not feel that you need to follow this exactly (we often adjusted and changed the schedule at school too!), but if your child benefits from a predictable schedule, I would suggest using this as a jumping off point.

The district has provided this easy guide to logging in at home: Student Login Procedures from home.  Your student will need to be able to log in to his/her Google Account and Clever Account when it is time to complete schoolwork from home.  If you do not have username or password information, please email support@redlands.freshdesk.com  or let me know through email/Remind and I will be happy to help!

Remember that we must all do our part is stay healthy!  Get a good night’s sleep, eat your fruits and vegetables, get outside time (but keep your “social distance”!), and wash your hands frequently.  I can’t wait to see you all when school starts again!

Let's wash our hands
